I was first introduced to Balcones in February through my best friend, Jessica. I would always make fun of her about how she was in a “cult.” She kept insisting on me trying out her gym, so I gave in and gave Balcones a try. It was also perfect timing since I had signed up for the Tough Mudder that I wanted to train somewhere that would push my limits.
My first class Darla was coaching and I remember thinking how bada** she looked and how I wanted to improve my body. With Darla and Jess’s encouragement I signed up for six months and haven’t left since.
Since joining Balcones my goals have changed. Before I wanted to lose weight and look like how I did in high school, but now I just want get stronger and see how far I can push myself. I am no longer afraid of gaining big arms and legs, but rather embrace it and see it as my strengths.
My goal now and for the upcoming year is to get out of my “safe zone.” At times I get comfortable at a certain weight and psyche myself out thinking that I can’t go any heavier. I want to be able to gain that confidence during EVERY work out and know that I CAN go heavier.
I’m with everyone when it comes to my favorite memory…. there are so many!! One that stands out would be when I PR’d on my dead lift a few weeks after joining Balcones. I remember being 5 pounds away from 200 and I just could not lift it, but with everyone cheering me on and encouraging me that I was really stoked anyway. At that moment it wasn’t just my PR, but everyone else as well.
