I was a college athlete and continued playing basketball and other sports competitively after I graduated. A couple of years ago, I began feeling like I could not get up and down the court anymore due gaining weight. I play basketball with guys so being strong and moving quick is key to keeping up with them. I had heard about CrossFit and its benefits from my brother and other friends so I decided to give it a try to see if it would help with feeling so “heavy.”
My first impression of CrossFit was that it was challenging. There are so many different movements involved that I had never done before so I knew getting into Crossfit that I had to put in the work.
Aside from me dropping a decent amount of weight, the biggest change I’ve seen since starting is my mobility/flexibility. I got into CrossFit to work on getting stronger and quicker so I could keep up with the boys I was playing with. In order to do some of the movements in CrossFit I had to become mobile; in working on that specifically for the movements in CrossFit I have been able to reciprocate that onto the court and am able to get to the basket more efficiently now.
Currently I am working on getting stronger. I’ve never been the type of girl that wants to be “huge,” but I do want a little definition.
I have several great Balcones memories, but one that I will remember for life is when we were doing a workout with DB snatches and box jumps. I’m always one to push myself to the limits so I decided to do 30″ box for a workout for my first time ever. I can definitely jump 30″, but I have never done it consistently for a workout. I was on the last round of 3 and I finished my DB snatches, the summer heat made my hands super sweaty so when I got to the top of my snatch I just dropped the DB since it was slipping out any way and I dropped it right on my big toe. I walked around for two minutes to gain my composure and finish the last round of 30 box jumps. Later that evening I decided to go to urgent care. After X-Rays I found out that I had broken my toe and crushed the tip into 3 pieces! Now every day, my BCF family reminds me to not dop anything!!! Good times.
